While most people are hitting the beaches and BBQs for 4th of July weekend, you could be grabbing your snowboard and heading out for a weekend full of carving, half pipes and rails. That’s right, Mammoth Mountain, CA, will stay open for skiing and snowboarding through the 4th of July. This is only the 11th time this has happened in the past 31 years.

Canyon Lodge and the Eagle Base area have both closed for the season, but the Main Lodge will remain open.

Discounted Season Passes for 2010-11

Tuesday, 27 April 2010 11:00 First Tracks

ski-resort-season-passes

If you're an avid skier or snowboarder, now's the time to purchase your 2010-11 season passes. Most ski resorts offer discounted rates for purchasing early. Some passes let you ski at multiple resorts throughout the season, and some passes even get you in through the rest of this season.

Killington season passes for 2010-11 allow guests who pay now the opportunity to use their pass for the rest of this season. Although, if you choose the payment plan the pass wouldn't work until next season. Squaw has season passes that are all bargain-priced, and are available in a variety of options. Right now, for just $49 down, skiers can lock in a $599 price for the Epic Season Pass which gets them unlimited and unrestricted skiing at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly.

These rates don't last forever, and the longer you wait, the higher they go. Act now to get the best savings possible!

Skiing on a Budget for New Yorkers

Monday, 12 April 2010 12:50 First Tracks

While New Yorkers don't have easy access to the sizeable Rockies or Tetons, nor do they have the luxury of skiing on powder (it's pretty much just ice), but they do have some nice options if they want to get some inexpensive skiing trip or two in during the season. It's called the Metro-North Railroad's one-day getaway to Thunder Ridge Ski Area in Patterson, N.Y. This may very well be the cheapest and easiest ski trip in the region. The round-trip train fare is just $51.50 ($50.43 if you order online) and includes an all-day lift ticket.

The weekend-and-holiday service has been around for at least 10 years, but it's not very well known. The trip is about 1 hour and 45 mins each way. This ski area is pretty small, however, with a vertical drop of just 500 feet, two main chairlifts (a double and a triple), a minor-league half-pipe and enough snowmaking machines to cover the ski area's 100 acres of short trails, which range from each to mildly challenging.

Snowboarding Tips

Friday, 09 April 2010 13:07 First Tracks

Happy Friday everyone! Just wanted to share some good snowboarding tips I found on snowboardingtips.com.

1. To determine whether you're regular or goofy-footed, simulate a tug-of-war game by tyeing a rope to a pole. Position yourself with on foot in front and pull hard. Keep switching your front foot from left to right. You should notice that one of them feels more stable and gives you a stronger pull. That is the board you want in front while boarding.

2. If it's your first time boarding, take a semi-private lesson with a group of your friends and one instructor. It's not too expensive, you'll get a lot out of it, and you'll make a lot of memories as you and your friends help each other, and of course, laugh at each other along the way.

3. Get in shape through stretching and strength training. You'll especially want to stretch and strengthen your calves, thighs, shoulders and neck. You use these muscle groups often while boarding.

4. Drink lots of water the night before you hit the slopes, NOT ALCOHOL. Save that for when you're done riding.

5. Make sure you get your board waxed often. I'm talking at least every second to third day on the slopes. Not only does this help you go faster, it protects your board from abrasion caused by snow.

Spring Snowboarding

Tuesday, 06 April 2010 09:00 First Tracks

Don't start packing your snow gear away just yet, Spring snowboarding has plenty to offer. Many resorts stay open well into April, with plenty of snow on the ground and a full slate of services still being offered. Plus, lift tickets are generally much cheaper during the off-season, and slopes tend to be a lot less crowded.

Spring is a great time to take a lesson or two, as class sizes are typically smaller and instruction can be more personalized. And, you can board while enjoying the warmer temperatures. Just remember to dress in layers so you can shed some as the sun comes up, but cover back up as it gets cooler. Because the sun is out longer in the spring, you can even get more boarding into your day.

And, if you do decide to check out spring boarding at the local resorts, take a look at the activities they have to offer. Warm weather BBQs, Easter egg hunts and pond skimming contests give you a great opportunity to kick back and relax while enjoying the last few weeks of snow.
